Hi, I’m Kerri MacKay (they/them), also known as Kerri on the Prairies.
I’m a freelance writer from Winnipeg with over a decade of experience in health writing, blogging and article writing, as well as video, podcast and other content creation.
Shortly after I started university, I picked up a few more writing contracts while completing my bachelor’s degree in Physical & Health Education at the University of Winnipeg, where later one of my profs would tell me “Your writing style is pretty casual, but it works for me.”
As it turns out, that style works great for the Internet! I am equipped with a degree that helps me ensure the articles I am writing are current, research-based, and can be understood by people from all backgrounds—turns out that last bit is called “knowledge translation”, and I’ve been doing it for a lot longer than I knew there was an actual name for it! Clients I’ve worked with include WebMD, Health-Union/Social Health Network, Healthline, Asthma Canada, and more.
The sprinkles on top? I have fun with the writing I do, too. (Cherries are overrated!) I believe that fun while writing means more fun—and more learning—while reading.
In addition to being a writer and health creative, I am a constituency assistant, patient researcher and Patient Network lead with the Manitoba Primary Care Research Network based out of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Manitoba. I am a three-time Stanford MedicineX ePatient Scholarship recipient, two-time MedicineX ED presenter, and in 2022 was a co-host and question-asker on the podcast “Peter, How Does the Government Work?“.
As likely made apparent by the rainbows, I am queer/aroace, which alongside my disabilities affects how I see the world. My interests include technology, progressive politics, design, baking, podcasts and podcasting, archery, aviation/aviation safety and security, and the 2SLGBTQIA+ and disability communities.
Let’s work together!
Whether you’re also in Winnipeg or somewhere else on our beautiful planet, if you’ve considered adding a blog to your business site, need a refresh of your content, or want to do more on social media and don’t have the time? Let’s explore that together! I’m always seeking new experiences to challenge myself creatively, learn new things… and share those things with the people who matter to you!
